We Got Flow Interviews (BIG J tha White Wonder)
(We Got Flow) Would you compare your style of music to that of old school or newer artists?
(Big J) I compare my style to anyone who speaks about their reality. I'm influenced by new and old artists who have something to say. I have nothing against the swagger rap or the jerkin. I think it completes our movement and has a place. That just isn't my lane. I'm very comfortable in my lane, and I feel I do what I do as well as anyone out now.
(WGF) What's your take on the controversy regarding hip/hop and rap of today?
That depends on what controversy we're talking about. My biggest problem with the game is the lack of originality. There's no soul to the music anymore. I came up taught that you were supposed to leave a part yourself in your music, and you can't do that piggybacking off of what another person is doing. I feel like we can't be afraid to make our own lane and stay in it even if the mainstream goes in the opposite direction. Hip-Hop to me is expressing you, not expressing what the last kat was saying just to a different beat.
(WGF) What are some experiences in your life that have influenced both your character and your music?
(Big J)My biggest life experience that influenced my music was growing up feeling like I needed to be someone other than who I really was in order to be accepted. That's the main reason I am so focused on presenting who I really am in my music. Real life situations as opposed to poppin and snappin. I am not a dope boy. I don't have the funds to stunt. Everything I have I worked for. And every penny I make goes to my kids, then my dream. I'm hungry, that's the message I'm tryin to portray.
(WGF) Are there any charities or causes that if given the opportunity you would like to contribute to?
(Big J)Yeah, I'd love to contribute or begin my own charity committed to helping cons secure jobs when they are released. That hits home with me alot. Seeing my friends and alot of my family come out and regress when all they needed was a hand up after being released to succeed.
(WGF) A lot of people have dreams, but not everyone has what it takes to make them come true. What sets you apart from every other aspiring artist or producer? What motivates you to keep moving forward day-to-day?
(Big J) I do this because I love it, because at the lowest points my life, music got me through. I don't know what the future holds, but I do believe everything happens for a reason. I control what I can. I'll continue put myself in my music and I will not be outworked. All that's left is to let the chips fall where they may.
(WGF) If you were to hear one of your songs for the first time what about the song would stand out to you?
(Big J)The content. I'm giving you my life and how I see the world. I'm not just regurgitating what's said in every other song.
(WGF) Education is necessary to achieve successs. Is this a statement you agree with? If so, how has education been beneficial to you?
(Big J) I think that education is not for everybody. I think the basics, grade and high school, are essential. Beyond that I believe it depends on individual situations.
(WGF) An artist gives a piece of his/herself in every work out art. What about you is reflected in your music?
(Big J) That's easy, I'm a white kid from the street who got married to young, who's wife left him because of his dream. I'm loyal, I'm broke, I'm hungry, and I'm ready.
(WGF) Was there ever a time when you felt like "throwing in the towel", when the road to achieving your goals was to bumpy to travel? How did you overcome that struggle?
(Big J) Definately. When my family fell apart. I asked myself everyday if my dream was worth it. I just realized that you have to be yourself. People are goin to accept you or not. I think everything happens for a reason. I'm going to just continue taking every opportunity that comes my way and hopefully I'll b where I want to b in when the dust settles.
(WGF) Why should people listen to your music?
(Big J) I hope people listen to my music because I put my heart into it. This is my life. And I hope that they can learn something from what I been through or just have a good time listening to some true Hip-Hop.
